Christmas Gift Guide: 5 of the Best Independent Shops to get your Homeware & Interior gifts from this Christmas
If like us you're looking to support independent retailers this Christmas after the UK’s 2nd lockdown - here’s a handy list of our favourite retailer picks for the best and most beautiful homewares that you can order from online this Christmas.
1. The Shop
The Shop is a lovely store tucked away in Hertford - when you step into their store you are immediately transported to the beach house of your dreams - with so many of us having to cancel holidays this year and the mental health sacrifices we’ve had to plough through by not being able to get away and recharge - this store is the perfect place to bring that holiday feeling home for someone special.
Think, gorgeous macrame planters, honey coloured woven baskets, beautifully rustic spanish ceramics and terracotta pots as far as the eye can see. The inspiration for their store is the rolling hills of Ibiza… now who do you know that needs that in their life?
They also have a florist in Hertford so why not complete the gift with a lovely bouquet of flowers to let someone know you love them. Sounds lovely, right?
Our top pick:
Terracotta Industrial Planter - £45
This beautiful industrial planter looks gorgeous in almost any space - during this last year I think it's safe to say that most of us have appreciated the healing nature of plants - reveling in the changing seasons and enjoying some gardening have been common themes in coping with change. Bring the outside in with this lovely Terracotta planter, great for a cosy reading nook.
How to order: 01992 587737 for collection and local delivery. For fresh flowers and dried bouquets you can order at the link below.

2. POST Greenlanes
POST is without a doubt the cool kid on the block - their independent boutique in Stoke Newington, London is run by cool cats Eka and Dusty who choose every item in the shop based on timeless style in favour of passing trends.
Think cosy homely independent boutique - now make it rock and roll. What I love about their store is that you won't find the same products that pop up in every independent boutique, they choose items that are unique - that will make you stop to think, make you linger and imagine whether you could pull off that cool tshirt or that fierce piece of jewellery.
Okay, so maybe I've been lingering a little, can you tell?
Their homewares are just as enticing with beautiful candles *cough cough* MDT candles *cough cough*, gorgeous throws and blankets and ceramics.
Our top pick:
This pure wool Dusty pink blanket just screams cosiness, opting for wool over synthetic fabric guarantees a warm, cosy and quality cuddle on the sofa. As the nights get colder and darker cosiness and comfort is a MUST. All for just £65 - can't say fairer than that can you?
How to order: You can order any of their lovely items by shopping at the link below.
3. East of Eden
East of Eden's eclectic mix of beautiful homewares are enough to make you linger a bit longer and buy a couple of gifts for yourself while you're at it… You know, because you've worked so hard, you might as well treat yourself right?
Practical and beautiful graphic prints, joyous and elegant Christmas ornaments, quality leather bags, kitchen glassware and ceramics and so so much more.
The curation that Graham the owner stocks is carefully curated to be timeless, to tell stories and to bring a smile to your face.
At East of Eden, their ethos is that modern isn't a style - it's an approach. We wholeheartedly agree, with that in mind - you are guaranteed to find something that you like in their store.
Our top pick:
It was really hard to choose just one item but I would say that I fell in love with these etherial artificial flower and berry wreaths, dried flowers are a huge trend right now and what's better than combining a classic tradition with a beautiful modern reboot in this gorgeous hydrangea bloom.
Also I had to double take because I didn't realize they were even artificial! Perfect for hanging on doors (imagine the debris from a real one) and in high activity areas. Use them for years to come and treasure them forever.
How to order: You can order at the below link to their website - they also offer free postage within the IP17 area and local collection.
4. Adventures in Furniture
Furniture that is build to last seems to be a thing of the past as big box stores search for cheaper and faster ways to manufacture the latest trends.
That’s where buying from an indie retailer will always be different - Adventures in Furniture stock the most beautiful sustainable furniture, all manufactured in small family owned workshops across Europe.
This allows them to customise their pieces to you and provide you with furniture that will last the test of time. Say bye to veneers and hello to solid oak & comfortable quality that will last years and years to come.
Our top pick
We love this hanging ribbon shelf as a great gift, think candles, a few strategically selected books and a gorgeous ceramic vase to pop some dried flowers in - brilliant!
How to order: On their website! Their showrooms are closed but they are still open for non contact delivery and assembly.
5. The Bristol Artisan
The Bristol Artisan stocks beautiful hand made products for the home from over 50 independent artisans across the UK.
Their products have an emphasis on quality and sustainability and they stock a range of ceramics, jewellery, homewares, lighting, clothing, cards, gifts, wrapping paper, original prints, beauty products and dried flower bouquets.
A true independent business emporium with a gorgeous store front and the most awe inspiring dried bouquet satellite installation I think I've ever seen!
Our top pick:
It wouldn’t be a homeware list without any ceramics now would it?
We are OBSESSED with this mug - the curved ridges and the white and copper glaze are just perfect.
Reading about how is made really makes us appreciate the alchemy that is ceramic making! I am a huge fan of tactile mugs, it always feels so satisfying imprinting your fingers into the texture as you sip a hot latte at home… Ahhhhhhh.
How to order: You can order on their website - they offer UK, European and International Shipping making it easier than ever to support independent business.
You can find all of our candles at these stores plus a plethora of other quality, handmade interior products and homewares.
When you shop small, you buy products that have LIFE - you buy products that have story and were made by hands and minds of your neighbours, your friends and your community.
Use your money to make a difference this Christmas and get some of the most unique and gorgeous gifts for your loved ones to boot!
